Australian Study by University of Queensland Fingers Plastic Distribution Pipes as a Source of Microplastics in Drinking Water
Detection and Quantification of Nanoplastics and Microplastics in Australian Drinking Water – Nanoparticle counts in tap water were estimated at 106–107 particles/mL
These findings indicate the presence of nanoplastics in drinking water and highlight the need to consider them in future assessments of water quality and potential human exposure.
The higher NP concentrations observed in the study may reflect contributions from leaching from plastic distribution pipes, wear of polymeric gaskets and seals, degradation of storage tank linings, or release from household plumbing systems.
The slightly larger mean particle size in tap water may reflect contributions from distribution system factors, such as pipe abrasion.
